Training

Bicycle Trainer

The best bike trainer is the one that you are going to use regularly. A rear-wheel trainer stand is probably the best choice for the majority of riders.

Roller style trainers are not for novices. Roller trainers give a more realistic road feel and some advanced riders prefer them, but rollers require constant focus and concentration to keep the wheels on the roller surface. Many bike shop spin classes (you bring your bike and a trainer stand) forbid rollers in the shop -- when (not "if") the rider goes off the rollers, the crashes are spectacular and the danger to the adjacent riders is very high.

My faithful "gerbil wheel" is a rear-wheel trainer stand and was economically priced (the El Cheapo on sale). It has three tension settings: #1 Easy, #2 Slight Incline, #3 Uphill in a 20mph headwind, on the flywheel and no computer readout. If you want to buy one there is almost always somebody wanting to sell their unused trainer stand.

Trainer stands are great to get in some mileage when the weather is bad or if you are convalescing from illness or injury.
What is a better bike trainer? The kind your wheel locks into or rollers. What is the advantage?
